Katsushika Hokusai was born in 18th century Edo (modern Tokyo). His adventure with painting begun at a young age and continued throughout his whole life. The artist changed his name more than 20 times, before finally settling with Katsushika Hokusai. He was a true genius and could do anything. The variety of his works was huge: he was creating prints, paintings, drawings and manga.

The Great Wave off Kanagawa is one of the most recognized and loved woodblock prints outside of Japan. It appears on clothing, notebooks, smartphone cases and prints. The famous print is a part of the Thirty-six views of Mount Fuji series created by Katsushika Hokusai. In the beginning, it was mass-printed and cheaply sold. Even though their first distribution was cheap and popular, now the cost of an original is exceptionally high.

When creating the Great Wave off Kanagawa, Hokusai was about 70 years old. His woodblock prints were seen as a popular form of commercial form of expression. The view inspired European artists. The view on Mount Fiji is sacred, beautiful and mysterious. Those monster waves, even though they are surely deadly, burst with dynamics and motion in the otherwise calm scene.

Our Great Wave off Kanagawa giclee framed print is the reproduction of the well-loved woodblock masterpiece. Our available frames and printing technique allows us to create a true representation of the creativity and skill Hokusai showed in his artwork.
