The most famous painter of the Western world in 17th century. His immaculate cityscapes of Venice have brought him fame all over Europe but also attracted wealthy, educated tourists to the Eternal City.
The painter had a very close professional relationship with British consul John Smith who became his agent and patron. In fact, at Smith’s prompting Canaletto came to London and stayed here for 10 years.
Canaletto is one of the favourite artists of Queen Elizabeth. At the moment, in Royal Collection there are at least 50 paintings and 140 drawings of Venetian master.
