Selection of fine art prints and framed art by Alphonse Mucha.
Alphonse Mucha - Czech painter and illustrator (24 July 1860 – 14 July 1939). Artistic movement: Art Nouveau.
Alphonse Mucha is regarded as one of the most defining artists of Art Nouveau style. His paintings, illustrations and posters are depicting almost entirely women in highly decorative settings. These ornamental backgrounds, full of whiplash lines, curves, inspired by asymmetric shapes of flowers and plants were essential to Art Nouveau.
Mucha became successful artist after hiring by star actress Sarah Bernhardt. Over 6.5 feet high art prints promoting her theatrical plays plastered all over Paris have caused quite a sensation. For Mucha, the world of advertising has opened up. He was making posters for manufacturers of biscuits, beers, cigarettes, bicycles, railroads and so on.
Funnily enough, Mucha has not kept his Art Nouveau works in high regard. He wished to be known as history painter. His monumental series Slav Epic of 20 huge oil paintings combine elements of Symbolism, mysticism and cultivate idea of Pan-Slavism calling for the unity of all Slavic nations.
