There is a lot of art in movies, tv shows and online series. Just take a good look.
Johannes Vermeer somehow fits in that atmosphere of control and dominance of TV series The Handmaid’s Tale. The Milkmaid on the wall seems natural in such circumstances. Even her outfit (oh, that bonnet!) corresponds with the costume Offred and other handmaids were forced to wear.
The dim light in the houses of the Gilead ruling elite also resembles Vermeer’s handling of lights and shadows in his paintings. Likewise, the Dutch master perfectly goes with traditional interiors.
Let’s not forget The Milkmaid is the painting from the 17th century. Back then women have had limited roles to play. Just like maids in Gilead.
Johannes Vermeer’s masterpiece has been spotted in The Handmaid’s Tale, season 3, episode 10.
